Xbox is reportedly preparing a new set of software optimizations aimed at improving battery life on portable gaming devices running Windows 11. According to information shared by leaker Moore’s Law Is Dead, the initiative is part of an internal effort known as the “Green Leaf” project.
The reported changes focus on reducing power consumption through new optimization profiles integrated into the Xbox Game Development Kit (GDK), potentially offering better efficiency for handheld gaming systems.
New Profiles Designed for Energy Efficiency
The leak mentions two profiles currently in development: “Power Optimized” and “Power Optimized Plus.” These are intended to help games reduce hardware usage during less demanding moments, such as menus, lobbies, or low-detail environments.
Unlike traditional power presets available in system settings, the new profiles would require direct implementation by game developers. The goal is to dynamically lower power consumption without significantly affecting the gameplay experience.
According to the report, internal testing using games such as Fortnite showed promising results, with energy savings reportedly reaching up to 30%.
For handheld gaming devices, where battery life and thermal management remain major limitations, these optimizations could become an important advantage. Developers would also gain greater flexibility in balancing performance and efficiency depending on gameplay scenarios.
The new functionality is expected to arrive between May and June, although Microsoft has not officially confirmed the project.
Part of Broader Windows and Xbox Changes
The initiative may be linked to Microsoft’s wider “Windows K2” effort, which focuses on improving performance and reducing unnecessary system overhead across Windows 11.
At the same time, Xbox leadership under Asha Sharma has been reshaping the platform’s priorities. Recent decisions include reducing emphasis on artificial intelligence integrations, such as ending development of Gaming Copilot for Xbox consoles and mobile devices.
The reported handheld optimizations suggest Microsoft is now placing greater focus on practical improvements that directly affect the gaming experience, particularly as portable gaming PCs continue to grow in popularity.
