Valve has announced a new reservation system for the Steam Controller following the accessory’s rapid sellout shortly after returning to the Steam store this week.
The controller became available on Monday and reportedly sold out within around 30 minutes. Soon after, listings began appearing on resale platforms such as eBay at prices significantly higher than the original retail cost.
In response to concerns over scalping, Valve confirmed that pre-orders opening Friday will be restricted to one Steam Controller per user account.
According to the company, reservation requests will be processed in chronological order. Once additional stock becomes available, users will receive purchase invitations based on their place in the queue.
Customers who receive an order invitation will have 72 hours to complete the purchase through Steam before the opportunity passes to the next person in line.
Rollout Begins in North America
The reservation system will first launch in the United States and Canada next week. Valve also plans to expand availability to the United Kingdom, the European Union, and Australia in the following weeks.
The company has not yet provided a confirmed schedule for future stock replenishments.
Valve is also expected to correct a pricing issue identified during the initial sales wave, where taxes were reportedly not applied properly in certain regions. The error resulted in some buyers paying up to $7 less than intended.
