Sony has officially confirmed that God of War Laufey will launch exclusively for PlayStation 5 on February 16, 2027, giving fans a firm release date for the next chapter in the acclaimed action franchise.

The announcement was made by Sony Santa Monica creative head Cory Barlog during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con. Shortly after the reveal, PlayStation shared a brief teaser on its official social media channels featuring the game’s golden logo. The title is now available to wishlist on the PlayStation Store, although Sony has not yet revealed pricing or pre-order details.

God of War Laufey marks a significant shift for the long-running series, becoming the first mainline entry to move away from Kratos as its central character. Instead, players will step into the role of Faye, Kratos’ late wife, whose story was introduced in God of War (2018). The new adventure follows Faye as she journeys through a realm tied to the gods’ afterlife, where she may encounter deities tied to Kratos’ violent past.

Earlier this summer, Sony offered an extended gameplay presentation showcasing the title’s opening sequence along with its fast-paced aerial combat system. The latest release date announcement confirms that the game will arrive less than a year after its first major gameplay reveal.

Sony Santa Monica has also confirmed that another God of War project centred on Kratos is currently in development and will be released at a later date, though no launch window has been announced.

In addition, the studio addressed concerns surrounding physical game releases. Despite Sony’s reported plans to scale back physical disc production in the coming years, God of War Laufey will be released on a standard physical disc rather than as a download code packaged in a retail box.

The game’s launch falls within what is expected to be one of the busiest release periods of 2027. February’s schedule already includes Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis on February 12, Persona 4 Revival on February 18, and Microsoft’s Fable reboot on February 23. Many publishers are adjusting release windows as the industry prepares for the anticipated arrival of Grand Theft Auto VI, making early 2027 one of the most competitive periods for major game launches.
