The long-running rumors are finally becoming reality: Paramount Pictures and Activision have officially revealed plans to bring Call of Duty to the big screen.
According to the announcement, Paramount will “develop, produce, and distribute a live-action feature film based on Call of Duty.” While no details about the plot, cast, or release window have been shared yet, both companies emphasized their commitment to delivering a film that stays true to the franchise’s signature style and expansive narrative universe. The project aims to appeal to both veteran players and audiences discovering the series for the first time.
Paramount’s Gaming Adaptation Track Record
This won’t be Paramount’s first venture into the world of video game adaptations. The studio first tested the waters with Lara Croft: Tomb Raider in 2001 and has recently found major success with the ongoing Sonic the Hedgehog movie series starring Ben Schwartz, James Marsden, and Jim Carrey.
Talks of a Call of Duty movie have circulated for years, with speculation often pointing to stories inspired by the Modern Warfare and Black Ops sub-series. Writers from high-profile films—including even a screenwriter connected to Joker—have reportedly been linked to past iterations of the project. In 2017, then-Activision executive Tim Kilpin stressed that the company would only move forward “if the script and the story [were] right.”
What’s Next for Call of Duty
While fans wait for more news about the film, the next game in the series, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, is scheduled to release on November 14 for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
In a recent update, Activision confirmed that the Carry Forward system for skins and operators introduced in Black Ops 6 will not carry over to the new title, citing a return to what makes Call of Duty distinct at its core.
