The Néro The Assassin finale delivers definitive answers and gruesome twists — yet it leaves just enough unresolved threads to spark hopes for a second season.
⚠️ Spoiler warning: Major plot details from the Season 1 finale follow.
A Bloody and Surreal Ending
Episode seven closes with chaos at the fortress of Ségur. The one-eyed witch is sacrificed, drought looms, and Perla — isolated and desperate — cuts open her head with the witch’s dagger. To her horror and awe, her blood brings dead insects back to life.
Meanwhile, Horace exposes the Church’s lies before being publicly executed. He warns the crowd that the Devil’s return is a fabrication used to strengthen the Church’s control — moments before he’s beheaded. Among the horrified witnesses is Perla, who’s soon recognised and chased by the Penitents.
Néro manages to rescue her, and together with Hortense, Lothar, Zineb, Rochemort, and a handful of rebel soldiers, they plot to reclaim Ségur. Their plan hinges on Hortense posing as the Princess of Ségur to lead a peasant army and lure the Penitents out while Néro and his team infiltrate the fortress.
But betrayal strikes — and not from where anyone expected. As their plan collapses, Rochemort reveals that Néro himself sabotaged it to spare everyone from certain death. Néro insists he only wanted to protect Perla and Hortense.
A brutal confrontation follows. Néro is captured and hung upside down, forced to watch as Perla sacrifices herself by stabbing her stomach with the witch’s dagger. As she dies, storm clouds gather and rain finally returns to the drought-stricken land — a supposed sign of divine forgiveness.
Brother Penitence declares it a miracle, but his faith clashes violently with the archbishop’s arrogance. In a shocking twist, he pushes the archbishop to his death, seizing control of Ségur himself.
In the closing moments, Néro weeps over Perla’s body before being struck unconscious. A shadowy figure drags Perla away — and moments later, she awakens, alive once again. Her final voiceover closes the season:
“I would like written on my tombstone: Her name was Perla, the daughter of an assassin and a whore. She was the last witch alive.”
Will Néro The Assassin Return for Season 2?
The finale leaves several major questions unanswered. Who is the mysterious figure who revived Perla? Will Néro discover that his daughter lives? Can Hortense, Rochemort, Zineb, and Lothar safely return to Lamartine to rally new forces? And now that Brother Penitence rules Ségur alone, how far will his divine ambitions reach?
As of now, Netflix has not announced a second season of Néro The Assassin, and neither the show’s creators nor the cast have confirmed further development. However, the open-ended finale and strong audience response make a renewal plausible.
In interviews, star Pio Marmaï has expressed deep attachment to the project, telling Vanity Fair France that:
“I have never been as invested in a project as this one — I gave everything I could to this show.”
He echoed the sentiment in Ouest France, adding that Néro The Assassin made him realize he only wants to work on projects where he can be “200% invested.”
If Netflix orders a Season 2, it’s safe to assume Marmaï will return — along with the dark, violent world that made Néro The Assassin one of the year’s most striking fantasy thrillers.
