Hulu has officially announced the premiere date for The Testaments, its highly anticipated follow-up to the acclaimed series The Handmaid’s Tale. The new drama will debut on April 8, launching with its first three episodes, followed by weekly releases.

Like its predecessor, The Testaments is based on a novel by Margaret Atwood and expands the dystopian world of Gilead from a new perspective. The series is described as a coming-of-age story set within the same theocratic regime, shifting focus to a younger generation raised under its rigid and brutal rules.

The story centers on two teenage girls with very different origins. Agnes, portrayed by Chase Infiniti, is devout and obedient, having known no life outside Gilead. Daisy, played by Lucy Halliday, arrives from beyond Gilead’s borders and is forced to adapt to its customs and beliefs.

The two are brought together at an elite academy overseen by Aunt Lydia, where girls are trained to become future wives through strict discipline justified by religious doctrine. Their growing bond ultimately becomes a destabilising force that threatens the system shaping their lives.

Ann Dowd reprises her role as Aunt Lydia, a character who became one of the most complex and unsettling figures in The Handmaid’s Tale. The supporting cast includes Mabel Li, Amy Seimetz, Brad Alexander, Rowan Blanchard, Mattea Conforti, Zarrin Darnell-Martin, Eva Foote, Isolde Ardies, Shechinah Mpumlwana, Birva Pandya, and Kira Guloien.

Bruce Miller, who developed The Handmaid’s Tale for television, returns as creator, executive producer, and showrunner. He is joined by an extensive team of executive producers, including Elisabeth Moss, who also starred in the original series. Mike Barker directed the opening three episodes, with MGM Television producing the series.

Chase Infiniti was confirmed as the lead of The Testaments in early 2025 and has since gained industry attention for her performance in the Oscar-nominated film One Battle After Another, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson.

With its direct ties to one of Hulu’s most successful original dramas and a story rooted deeply in Atwood’s literary universe, The Testaments is positioned as a major addition to the platform’s 2026 slate.
