Square Enix’s critically acclaimed RPG Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is set to reach a wider audience after being officially announced for Nintendo Switch 2 during the February 2026 Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase.

The game, the second installment in the remake trilogy of the iconic 1997 classic, will launch on June 3, 2026, marking a significant expansion of the series onto Nintendo’s next-generation platform. The announcement comes shortly after the first chapter, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, arrived on the Nintendo Switch, allowing new players to begin the reimagined saga.

The journey continues beyond Midgar

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth follows Cloud Strife and his companions as their journey moves beyond Midgar into a vast open world. Players reunite with familiar characters including Tifa, Aerith, Barret, Yuffie and Red XIII as they pursue Sephiroth and uncover deeper layers of the story.

The title blends cinematic storytelling with expansive exploration, offering a wide range of activities across diverse environments. From large-scale regions to quieter character moments, the game emphasizes both narrative depth and world-building. Locations such as the coastal resort of Costa del Sol highlight the lighter side of the group’s journey, giving characters time to interact outside of major conflicts.

Enhanced combat and exploration

Rebirth builds on the hybrid combat system introduced in the first installment, combining real-time action with strategic command-based mechanics. While accessible, the system offers increased tactical depth and can present a challenge in tougher encounters.

The world itself has been widely praised for its scale and visual detail, with seamless exploration across multiple regions designed to feel alive and interconnected.

A key moment for the trilogy

The Switch 2 release positions Nintendo players to experience the remake series as it progresses toward its conclusion. With Remake Intergrade now available and Rebirth arriving in June, the platform is expected to host the trilogy’s narrative arc as anticipation builds for the yet-to-be-announced third entry.

For players new to the series, the upcoming launch provides an opportunity to begin the story and continue through its next major chapter within months.

With one of the most ambitious RPG projects of the decade expanding to new hardware, the arrival of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on Switch 2 marks a major addition to the console’s 2026 lineup.
