With Grand Theft Auto VI edging closer to release, Rockstar Games may be rethinking how it brings one of the most anticipated titles of the decade to market. According to new reports, the studio is considering delaying the physical release of the game in favour of a digital-first launch, a move aimed at reducing the risk of leaks ahead of launch day.

The rumour comes via a Polish outlet, PPE, and was shared more widely after appearing on Reddit. Citing an unnamed source, the report claims Rockstar is exploring the possibility of not releasing physical copies of GTA VI on its expected November 19, 2026, launch date, instead prioritising digital versions on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

A Response to Past Leaks

Rockstar has long been a target of leaks, but the situation escalated in 2022 and again ahead of the game’s official reveal in December 2023, when early development footage circulated widely online.

While digital leaks are difficult to fully prevent, physical copies have historically been among the biggest sources of pre-release spoilers, often because retailers sell or ship games early.

By holding back boxed copies, Rockstar would effectively remove that risk. Without discs being distributed to retail stores ahead of time, the company would retain full control over when players can access the game.

Why Digital First Makes Sense for Publishers

Beyond leak prevention, a digital-first strategy aligns with broader industry trends. Publishers increasingly favor digital sales due to lower production and distribution costs, as well as tighter control over release timing and updates.

Eliminating packaging, shipping, and retail logistics also reduces operational complexity—though it is unlikely to result in a lower price for consumers.

For Rockstar and its parent company, Take-Two Interactive, the approach could offer a cleaner, more controlled global launch for a title expected to generate record-breaking sales.

What This Means for Players

For fans who prefer physical media, the move could be disappointing, especially for collectors who value boxed editions. However, the report suggests this would be a delay, not a cancellation, of physical copies. Retail versions could still arrive weeks or months after the digital launch.

At this stage, Rockstar has not commented publicly on the report, and no changes to the official release window have been announced. As with all unconfirmed information, the rumour should be treated cautiously until the company provides clarification.

For now, Grand Theft Auto VI remains scheduled for release in November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. A PC version has yet to be announced.
