A video published on Wednesday (17) suggests that PlayStation 6 titles may face challenges when being ported to PC. According to Bryan Hemskerk, art director at Massive Damage studio, this will be one of the biggest hurdles developers will need to navigate in the next console generation.

Speaking on the Broken Silicon podcast, hosted by the channel Moore’s Law is Dead, Hemskerk explained that creating PC ports requires taking into account different system configurations, GPUs, input devices, hardware availability, and other technical factors.

To avoid performance issues with ports, studios might decide not to fully push the PlayStation 6 hardware to its absolute limits. Hemskerk drew a comparison to Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, a remake of a classic that once pushed the PS2 to its peak but does not showcase the same boundary-pushing approach today.

By contrast, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is said to take advantage of every ounce of the PlayStation 5’s power (including the enhancements from the PS5 Pro), which is one reason why its PC release could take much longer.

PlayStation 6 vs. Portable Console

Hemskerk also clarified that while PCs might create bottlenecks for PS6 ports, Sony’s upcoming portable console—currently codenamed PlayStation “Canis”—shouldn’t face the same issue.

He noted that scaling down games for handheld hardware has become much easier thanks to modern upscaling technologies like DLSS, and with the arrival of PSSR and AMD’s FSR 4, the challenge will be even less significant.

As an example, he mentioned that Street Fighter 6 is already reported to look better on the rumored Nintendo Switch 2 than on the Xbox Series S, thanks to advanced upscaling techniques.

For this reason, Hemskerk expects the performance gap between the PS6 and the PlayStation “Canis” to be far smaller than the current difference between the Xbox Series X and Series S.

Leaks also suggest that “Canis” will ship with more powerful components than the ROG Ally and could receive upgraded models in the future. If true, the competition across both home consoles and portable devices is set to be more intense than ever in the years ahead.
