Sony is reportedly testing a new PS5 Pro system software update that would automatically activate Enhanced PSSR for games that already support the standard version of the technology.

The update is currently being tested with a limited group of PS5 Pro owners through an invitation-only beta program. If Sony releases the feature publicly, more compatible games could benefit from the company’s newer AI-based upscaling technology without requiring developers to issue separate Enhanced PSSR patches.

Enhanced PSSR Would Be Enabled by Default

According to ResetEra member Nicoreese, Sony has begun sending beta invitations that mention a new “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” setting.

The key difference from the current implementation is that the option would be turned on automatically. Players can still disable Enhanced PSSR via the console’s system settings if they encounter visual problems, compatibility issues, or performance concerns.

At present, Enhanced PSSR only works in games that developers have specifically updated to support the technology.

Under the reported beta system, games that already use the original PSSR could automatically switch to the enhanced version, removing the need for a separate update in many cases.

The change would not make Enhanced PSSR available across the entire PS5 library.

Games that never supported the original PSSR would still require developers to add support through a software patch. The reported change would mainly benefit titles that already use Sony’s existing upscaling technology.

That could nevertheless expand the number of games taking advantage of Enhanced PSSR without requiring developers to make extensive changes to their existing implementations.

Sony Previously Left Enhanced PSSR to Developers

PS5 Pro lead architect Mark Cerny previously explained that Sony intended to let developers decide when to introduce Enhanced PSSR into their games.

That approach gave studios control over compatibility and allowed them to identify supported titles clearly. It also meant players had to wait for individual game updates before they could use the newer technology.

Automatically applying Enhanced PSSR to games that already support standard PSSR would represent a shift in that strategy. Sony would still rely on developers to implement the original technology, but the company could make the enhanced version available to a much wider range of compatible titles.

The automatic Enhanced PSSR option appears to be limited to an invitation-only PS5 Pro beta for now.

Sony has not announced when the feature will become available to all PS5 Pro owners. The company has also not confirmed whether the reported functionality will remain unchanged upon the firmware update’s final release.

If the feature reaches the public version of the software, PS5 Pro owners could gain broader access to Enhanced PSSR without waiting for developers to issue individual game patches.
