The Halo franchise is making a comeback this month—but before you get too excited, you might want to keep your expectations in check.
It’s been nearly four years since Halo Infinite hit shelves in 2021, marking the series’ last big gaming release. Sure, there was the Halo TV series in 2022, but let’s be honest—most fans would rather pretend that never happened.
Now, in 2025, Halo is returning… just not in the form fans were hoping for. Instead of a new campaign, multiplayer expansion, or even a fresh spinoff, Microsoft is bringing Spartans to Fortnite. That’s right—Halo skins are dropping into Epic Games’ battle royale on August 7.
The announcement came from the official Fortnite account, with the line:
“Yeah, we called the experts in for this one… UNSC Spartans FOR THE VICTORY!! (and in the new Battle Pass). Get them August 7!”
On paper, it sounds like a fun crossover. But based on fan reactions, especially over on r/xbox, excitement is far from unanimous.
One user sarcastically commented:
“Yes, very good. Imagine not getting this. What if the industry had wasted its time on an ODST 2 where you drop into a battle Royale mode… That wouldn’t generate any hype or merrymaking whatsoever.”
Others were less amused, with one saying:
“Honestly? Gross. Hopefully Microsoft got a good check from Epic for this. I don’t get how Fortnite always gets praised for its crazy skins and collabs, but any other game gets slammed for doing the same.”
Some acknowledged the reality of the gaming industry today:
“If dropping $20 on a skin makes someone happy, then fine. But let’s not act shocked when more games go down this path—it works because people keep paying for it.”
It’s clear that fans are still feeling burned by Halo Infinite’s rocky launch and uncertain future. Many were hoping this summer would bring a sign of a proper Halo sequel or even a surprise ODST project—not just more cosmetics in a different game.
But for now, it looks like that’s all we’re getting. No word yet on what’s next for the mainline series, and this Fortnite crossover doesn’t move the needle much in that direction.
So, until something bigger comes along, you’ll have to settle for slaying in Fortnite—Spartan armor and all.
