Following the breakout success of Ne Zha II and its U.S. run from A24, another major Chinese animated film is preparing to make its way overseas. GKIDS has acquired the North American rights to The Legend of Hei 2, the sequel to the beloved 2019 feature The Legend of Hei, and will release it in limited theaters on September 5, 2025.

The film, based on MTJJ’s long-running web series The Legend of Luo Xiaohei, comes from Chinese animation studio Hanmu Chunhua (HMCH). MTJJ returned to direct alongside Gu Jie, with HMCH handling production. Since premiering in China on July 18, 2025, the movie has earned over $49 million at the domestic box office.

GKIDS’ Vice President of Distribution, Chance Huskey, praised the film, saying its “dazzling animation and emotional story” are sure to connect with new audiences in North America.

Story & Setting

The Legend of Hei 2 follows Xiao Hei as he joins Luye—the last disciple of his late master Wuxian—to uncover a conspiracy threatening both the human and spirit worlds. When an unexpected attack shatters the fragile peace between realms, Hei and his allies must fight to protect the bond that holds them together.

The film combines modern-day settings with traditional Chinese cultural influences, reimagining how ancient spirits coexist with today’s world. Chronologically, the story is set after the first movie but before the events of the animated series.
