Fans of Chicago Med are finally getting a closer look at Sharon Goodwin’s (S. Epatha Merkerson) family, as her oldest son, David, is set to appear in Season 11. Gbenga Akinnagbe, known for his role in The Wire, has been cast in the recurring role and will make his debut in Episode 6. New episodes air Wednesdays at 8/7c on NBC and are available the following day on Peacock.
Showrunner Allen MacDonald shared with TV Insider, “I’ve been a fan of his for a very long time. He’s just a wonderful actor.”
In addition to David, viewers will also see Sharon’s ex-husband Bert (Gregory Alan Williams) again. Bert, who has Alzheimer’s, was the person Sharon turned to at the end of Season 10, following a difficult season that included the end of her relationship with Dennis Washington (John Earl Jelks) and major cuts at the hospital.
MacDonald praised Merkerson’s performance last season, saying, “Goodwin showed incredible strength in her character development. S. Epatha Merkerson can do anything, and she had me in tears multiple times last season. Her going to Bert, even though he didn’t understand her, was telling—it’s her safe place. There’s no one she’s been more emotionally connected to than him. They raised three children together.”
Season 11 will continue exploring Sharon’s family, with the return of her son Michael (Hampton Fluker) and daughter Tara (Nicolette Robinson), who appeared in Episode 9 of last season following Sharon’s surgery after being stabbed by Cassidy.
