Call of Duty Update Dramatically Cuts File Size on PS5

Call of Duty has earned a reputation for massive install sizes over the years, often eating up huge chunks of hard drive space. Last year’s Black Ops 6 was a prime example, launching at 84.4 GB on PlayStation 5—though Activision recommended players keep at least 102 GB free. While that wasn’t the rumored 300 GB figure making the rounds before launch, it was still hefty by any standard.

Now, a new patch has appeared in PlayStation’s database that could bring some welcome relief.

Update 01.080.000 brings major storage savings

The upcoming update shows promising reductions across both consoles, but the PlayStation 5 version sees the most dramatic change.

  • On PS4, update 01.78 required 81 GB of space, while the new 01.80 build drops to 62 GB, saving about 19 GB.
  • On PS5, the change is far more striking: version 01.078.000 weighed in at a massive 126.224 GB, while the new 01.080.000 build comes in at just 25.377 GB. That’s over 100 GB freed up.

This reduction has sparked speculation that Black Ops 7, the next entry in the series, could launch with a far leaner install size than past titles. Some fans even wonder if the optimization could pave the way for a Nintendo Switch 2 release.

While the storage savings are good news, not everything on the horizon is as welcome. Black Ops 7 is set to include Secure Boot as an anti-cheat measure. The system was previously tested during the Battlefield 6 beta but left some players unable to access the game, which has raised concerns that it could cause similar issues here.

For now, though, players can look forward to giving their hard drives some much-needed breathing room. After years of hosting massive Call of Duty installs, trimming down more than 100 GB feels like a win.
