Xbox players who ran into problems with the recent Red Dead Redemption upgrade on Red Dead Redemption are finally starting to see some resolution. After weeks of confusion and frustration, Microsoft has begun issuing refunds to users on Xbox Series X who were incorrectly charged for an upgrade that was supposed to be free.
The controversy dates back to November, when Rockstar Games unexpectedly announced a new version of the original Red Dead Redemption. The move surprised many fans, particularly as long-running rumors suggested Rockstar was instead working on a current-generation upgrade for Red Dead Redemption 2 to better match its PC counterpart.
While the new release itself drew criticism for offering limited improvements, the real issue emerged on Xbox. Players who already owned a digital copy of Red Dead Redemption were meant to receive the upgrade at no additional cost. However, many reported being asked to pay again, with neither Rockstar nor Xbox initially taking responsibility for the error.
That situation now appears to be changing. According to multiple Reddit user reports, Xbox Support has begun contacting affected players directly. In publicly shared messages, Xbox acknowledged that the upgraded version “was intended to be free for those who had previously purchased a digital copy” and confirmed that refunds for the charges had been processed.
The refunds suggest keeping the issue on the platform side rather than with Rockstar’s distribution of the game. Several players in the same discussion threads say they have received identical notices and reimbursements, indicating that the fix is being rolled out more broadly.
Although it has taken close to two months to address the problem, the move brings some closure for Xbox users who felt caught in the middle of mixed messaging from both companies. For those affected, the outcome at least ensures they won’t be paying extra for what many viewed as a modest upgrade to a classic title.
