This year’s Tokyo Game Show has plenty of surprises, including something special for fans of puzzle adventures. Developer Level-5 unveiled a new trailer for Professor Layton and the New World of Steam, the long-awaited return of the beloved series.
The trailer offers a first real look at Steam Bison, USA, a bustling city full of energy and character. The story picks up one year after the events of Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, reuniting players with the iconic duo, Professor Hershel Layton and his apprentice Luke Triton.
However, fans will have to be patient: the trailer ends with confirmation that the game’s release has been moved to 2026 on Nintendo Switch, after originally being scheduled for 2025.

Voice Cast and Puzzle Designers
- Yo Oizumi reprises his role as Professor Layton.
- Mio Imada (Hinata Tachibana in the Tokyo Revengers live-action films) will voice Luke Triton for the first time.
- Puzzle enthusiasts can look forward to challenges crafted by QuizKnock, a well-known team of quiz and puzzle creators.
Brief History of Layton
The Professor Layton series debuted in 2007 with Professor Layton and the Curious Village. It went on to include a main trilogy, a prequel trilogy, and several spin-offs:
- Layton Brothers: Mystery Room (iOS)
- Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (crossover game)
- Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy (2017), which starred Layton’s daughter.
Professor Layton and the New World of Steam will be the first new mainline entry in nearly a decade, making its eventual release a major event for long-time fans.
