A petition opposing Sony Interactive Entertainment’s decision to stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games has begun to lose momentum after an initial surge in support, even as debate over the company’s digital-only future continues.

The online campaign, launched in early July following Sony’s announcement that it would discontinue physical game disc production from January 2028, quickly attracted global attention from collectors, preservation advocates, and physical media supporters.

The petition gathered approximately 250,000 signatures within its first six days, reflecting widespread concern over Sony’s move away from physical game releases.

However, support has slowed considerably since then. Over the following 24 days, the campaign added around 105,000 more signatures, bringing the total to roughly 355,000.

While the petition continues to attract supporters, its growth has leveled off compared with the rapid response seen immediately after the announcement.

Sony Maintains Its Position

Despite the public criticism, Sony has shown no indication that it plans to reverse its decision.

During a recent financial briefing, the company said it would “cautiously move forward” with its transition away from physical game discs, reaffirming its long-term strategy despite opposition from some sections of the gaming community.

The decision has sparked ongoing discussions about game preservation, ownership rights, and consumer choice as the industry increasingly shifts toward digital distribution.

Industry Reaction Remains Mixed

Not all major publishers share the concerns raised by the petition.

Ubisoft Chief Executive Officer Yves Guillemot recently said he does not expect Sony’s decision to significantly disrupt the gaming industry, suggesting that digital game distribution has already become the dominant way players purchase and access titles.

Digital downloads and subscription services have steadily grown over the past decade, reducing reliance on physical media across the industry.

Sony’s decision has renewed broader discussions about the future of digital gaming, particularly regarding long-term game preservation and ownership.

Supporters of physical media argue that discs provide greater control over purchased games and help preserve access to titles if digital storefronts close or licensing agreements change. Others believe the convenience of digital downloads and cloud-based services reflects the direction of the modern gaming market.

Although the petition demonstrated strong early opposition, its slowing growth suggests that public attention has begun to shift. With Sony continuing to support its digital-first strategy, the company appears unlikely to reconsider its plans to phase out physical PlayStation game discs beginning in 2028.
