Bad news for fans of KPop Demon Hunters: the breakout animated hit of 2025 won’t be returning anytime soon. According to Variety, Netflix has slated the sequel for a 2029 release, meaning viewers will have to wait nearly four years before the Huntr/x girls take the stage again.
The extended gap follows confirmation that Sony and Netflix have finalised their deal for the follow-up. While no official reason has been provided for the lengthy delay, it’s not unusual for high-end animation projects to take several years to complete — just look at Sony’s own Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which remains in production.
Still, considering the surprise success of K-pop Demon Hunters, the wait is sure to feel long for its devoted fans.
From Surprise Hit to Streaming Phenomenon
Released in the U.S. on June 20, 2025, KPop Demon Hunters became an instant sensation. The film stars Arden Cho, May Hong, and Ji-young Yoo as the voices of Rumi, Mira, and Zoey — members of the fictional K-pop group Huntr/x, who double as supernatural protectors when they’re not selling out stadiums.
The soundtrack became a hit in its own right, producing three Billboard Hot 100 singles: “Golden,” “Your Idol,” and “Soda Pop.” The latter two were performed by the film’s demonic rival boy band, the Saja Boys. The movie’s cultural footprint extended beyond streaming, even inspiring a Saturday Night Live parody sketch during the show’s Season 51 premiere in October.

Record-Breaking Numbers for Netflix
KPop Demon Hunters shattered Netflix records, becoming the platform’s most-watched film ever with 266 million views worldwide — surpassing Red Notice (230.9 million) and even topping streaming juggernauts like Squid Game and Wednesday.
Netflix capitalised on the success with a special sing-along version that premiered in 1,700 theatres on August 23, 2025, earning the #1 box office spot — a rare feat for the streamer, which typically avoids emphasising theatrical performances.
However, the film’s Halloween re-release didn’t replicate that magic. The limited run brought in just $600,000 on opening day and finished the weekend with $5.9 million, prompting one distribution insider to tell Deadline, “I don’t think there’s more juice left in that squeeze.”
What’s Next for KPop Demon Hunters
Despite the long wait ahead, the franchise’s influence continues to grow. Directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans have ruled out a live-action adaptation for now but confirmed that more stories are in development. Meanwhile, Netflix is using the film’s success to promote its expanding slate of animated projects.
So while KPop Demon Hunters 2 won’t hit screens until 2029, it’s clear the phenomenon is far from over — the Huntr/x girls will be back, and the stage will be waiting.
