Kojima Productions announced on Thursday that the world of Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding is expanding into a new anime titled Death Stranding Isolations. The studio revealed the first visual, staff details, and confirmed that the series will premiere on Disney+ in 2027. The project will tell an original story set within the Death Stranding universe.

Creative Staff

The anime is being directed by Takayuki Sano—known for his work on Attack on Titan The Final Season and Bullet/Bullet—at E&H Production. Illustrator Ilya Kuvshinov (The Wonderland, Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045) is handling the character designs.
Hideo Kojima serves as executive producer.

Story Overview

The official site outlines the central premise:

A world-shattering explosion once opened the gateway for wandering spirits to cross into the physical world. Their search for the living triggers destructive events known as the Death Stranding, which topple nations and leave survivors cut off from one another. Amid this fractured landscape, a legendary porter embarks on a journey to reconnect humanity, carrying both cargo and the hopes of those still clinging to life.

The anime will explore new characters living in North America while Sam Bridges continues his own cross-country mission. Among them are:

  • an elderly man seeking salvation in ways that defy Bridges’ ideals of connection,
  • a warrior woman intent on creating a world fueled by constant conflict,
  • a boy harboring resentment toward Bridges, and
  • a girl who clings to solitude.

Their stories intertwine as humanity faces collapse once more—signaled by “another explosion.”

Kojima previously mentioned in a Vogue Japan interview in May that an animated Death Stranding project was in development.

Other Death Stranding Adaptations

The franchise is also inspiring multiple separate adaptations:

  • DEATH STRANDING MOSQUITO, an animated feature film directed by Hiroshi Miyamoto at ABC ANIMATION STUDIO, with Aaron Guzikowski (Raised by Wolves) writing the screenplay.
  • A live-action film at Hammerstone Studios, written and directed by Michael Sarnoski (Pig, A Quiet Place: Day One), with Square Peg producing.

The original Death Stranding game launched for PlayStation 4 in November 2019 and later arrived on PC in July 2020. The upgraded Director’s Cut debuted on PS5 in 2021 and on PC in 2022.

The sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, premiered for PlayStation 5 on June 26, featuring a star-studded cast including Norman Reedus, Léa Seydoux, Troy Baker, Elle Fanning, George Miller, Nicolas Winding Refn, and others.

Kojima Productions also opened a Los Angeles division in 2021 to focus on music, film, and television projects, laying the groundwork for expansions like Isolation.
