Rockstar Games’ first trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6 was not a preview of a fully completed vision. According to Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson, the game was still taking shape when the trailer debuted, but its music helped establish the direction the team wanted to follow.

The comments come as the wait for GTA 6 continues. Rockstar’s first trailer introduced players to Lucia, Jason and the return to Vice City, while initially promising a 2025 release. The game is now scheduled for May 26, 2026, making the original release window a distant memory.

Tom Petty’s Song Helped Define the Game

In an interview with French outlet TroisCouleurs, Nelson discussed how Rockstar’s teams begin developing a new game. He explained that the process does not always start with a complete picture of the finished product. Sometimes, a particular image or song becomes the starting point for the team’s creative direction.

Nelson said the developers first visit the location they have chosen for a game, spend time driving around, take photographs and absorb the atmosphere. From there, they begin identifying the details and ideas they want to bring into the game.

The same process appears to have influenced GTA 6. Nelson described Tom Petty’s “Love Is a Long Road,” which featured in the first trailer, as a “mission statement” for the game.

The song helped communicate the feeling Rockstar wanted the game to have, even though the project itself was still being assembled. Nelson explained that a trailer represents the best of what the team has achieved at that stage, rather than a final version of everything the game will become.

The Trailer Offered More Than a Release Date

Looking back, the distinction is understandable. GTA 6’s first trailer was released nearly three years before its scheduled launch, and Rockstar has continued to keep details about the game relatively limited.

Even so, the trailer gave players a strong introduction to the game’s setting and characters. The choice of music also added another layer to the presentation, with its lyrics offering possible hints about the relationship between Lucia and Jason.

That interpretation remains speculative, but the song’s role in the trailer was clearly deliberate. Nelson’s comments suggest that the music was not simply selected to accompany the footage. It was part of the creative process that helped Rockstar establish what GTA 6 should feel like.

For fans, the interview offers a glimpse into how the game was taking shape behind the scenes. It also explains why the first trailer could feel so confident despite the project still being years away from release.
