Grand Theft Auto 6 is reportedly set to run at 30 frames per second on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S when it launches, according to a content creator who recently viewed extended gameplay at Rockstar North in Scotland.
Rockstar Games has primarily showcased the PlayStation 5 version of GTA 6 so far, including footage featured in the latest gameplay trailer released through Netflix. However, new details from a visit to Rockstar’s headquarters suggest that players should not expect a 60 FPS performance mode when the game launches.
Content creator DavyJones said he spent time at Rockstar North and watched co-director Rob Nelson play GTA 6 for roughly two hours. According to his account, Nelson confirmed that the console version is currently planned to run at 30 FPS at launch.
The demonstration reportedly took place on the standard PlayStation 5. The PlayStation 5 Pro is also not expected to offer a higher frame-rate mode at release based on the information shared during the visit.
When asked whether GTA 6 could offer a 60 FPS option, Nelson reportedly said he would need to speak with Rockstar’s technical team to determine whether such a mode could be introduced. This leaves open the possibility of a higher frame-rate option being added after launch.
Ray Tracing May Be Affecting Performance
One possible explanation for the 30 FPS target is Rockstar’s use of advanced lighting technology. The latest GTA 6 gameplay footage shows ray-traced effects, although some sections appear to display visual artifacts and flickering.
Ray tracing can place considerable demands on console hardware, particularly in a large open-world game with detailed environments, vehicles, characters and dynamic lighting. Rockstar may therefore be prioritizing visual quality and world simulation over a higher frame rate.
The studio could eventually introduce a performance-focused mode through a post-launch update. Such an update could reduce or disable certain ray-tracing effects in exchange for improved frame rates.
However, there is currently no confirmation from Rockstar that such an option is being developed.
PC Version Could Arrive Later
GTA 6 has only been announced for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with no PC release confirmed for launch.
Rockstar has previously released major games on PC after their console debuts. GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 both followed this approach, leading to speculation that GTA 6 could also take a similar path.
If Rockstar follows its previous release strategy, the PC version could arrive sometime after the console launch, potentially in 2027 or 2028, although no date has been announced.
A PC release could eventually provide greater flexibility for frame rates and graphical settings. It is also possible that future console hardware or later versions of the game could provide additional performance options, but there is no official information confirming this.
GTA 6 Is Building a Much Denser World
Performance is particularly important for GTA 6 because Rockstar is attempting to create a significantly more detailed world than the one seen in GTA 5.
According to the information currently circulating, the GTA 6 map is expected to be around twice the size of the GTA 5 map, while its population density could be roughly 11 times higher.
That combination of a larger environment, denser crowds, advanced graphics, ray tracing and complex world simulation could explain why Rockstar is targeting 30 FPS on current-generation consoles.
For now, players should treat the reported 30 FPS target as the expected launch configuration rather than a permanent limitation. Rockstar has yet to officially confirm whether GTA 6 will receive a higher frame-rate mode after release.
