Dave Bautista has officially been cast as Kratos in Prime Video’s live-action adaptation of God of War, taking over the role after Ryan Hurst was forced to leave the production because of an injury.
The former WWE star, known for his roles in Guardians of the Galaxy and Dune, will now portray the iconic Spartan warrior in Amazon MGM Studios’ television adaptation of Sony’s popular video game franchise.
Bautista had previously been linked to the role, with reports in August suggesting that he was in negotiations with Amazon MGM Studios. His casting has now been officially confirmed, and he has also been added to the show’s cast listing on the studio’s website.
Ryan Hurst exits after injury
Hurst was originally selected to play Kratos and had already begun production on the series. The actor, known for Sons of Anarchy and for portraying Thor in God of War Ragnarök, suffered a bicep injury while performing a stunt in June.
The injury required surgery, and production was subsequently halted.
Hurst’s recovery was expected to extend beyond the show’s production schedule, leaving the producers with little choice but to recast the central role. The change means previously filmed material featuring Hurst will need to be reshot.
The decision has disappointed some fans who had become attached to Hurst’s casting, particularly after production had already begun.
Bautista brings action experience to Kratos
Bautista’s casting has received a mixed response from fans, although many believe his physical presence and experience with dramatic roles make him a strong fit for Kratos.
The actor has already played physically imposing characters in major productions, including Drax in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Glossu Rabban in Dune. His transition to Kratos will require a different performance, however, as the character combines brutal combat with a much more emotional and complex story.
Kratos is one of the most recognizable characters in modern gaming, having evolved from a rage-driven warrior in the original God of War games into a more restrained father and reluctant hero in the later titles.
Some fans have welcomed Bautista’s casting because of his ability to combine an intimidating screen presence with more restrained dramatic performances.
Others have expressed disappointment that Hurst will not return, with some suggesting that production should have waited for his recovery rather than replacing him.
Production will resume in Vancouver
Prime Video has already ordered two seasons of God of War, with the productions expected to be filmed back-to-back.
Production is currently expected to resume in Vancouver in fall 2026. The restart will include extensive reshoots of scenes that were previously completed with Hurst.
The series is being developed as a live-action adaptation of the God of War franchise, with the first season expected to draw heavily from the Norse-era games.
Bautista now faces the challenge of taking on one of Sony’s most recognizable video game characters while stepping into a production that has already undergone a major cast change.
With filming set to resume later this year, further details about the show’s storyline, supporting cast and release plans are expected to emerge as production moves forward.
